Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that worst floods in Pakistan’s history had affected Sindh and Balochistan provinces the most this summer, and added that six million people had been rendered internally displaced. The floods caused losses and damage to the tune of $30bn, he said.

Mr Shah was speaking at the 26th convocation of the Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), Jamshoro, on Saturday.

A total of 987 students got their degrees. Out of them, 926 got bachelors, 48 MPhil and 13 PhD degrees. Eight toppers of faculty were awarded gold medicals and another eight for being best graduates. One female civil engineering student, Shumaila, won gold medal for the best student of the campus.

The CM said engineers played a dominant role in a country’s progress and development. Engineers offer solution to problems as they are supposed to ensure sustainable growth and development. He expressed the hope that the MUET would one day join 100 top-ranking universities of the world considering its satisfactory performance.

The CM congratulated young women who bagged gold medals, and said empowerment and development of women ensured social progress.

Students who had secured degrees should now begin their practical life. He said Benazir Bhutto had always aspired empowerment of women.

He said he was delighted to note that the MUET was recognised nationally and internationally. He said Pakistan was facing different challenges including economic obstructions.

Mr Shah said Sindh government was committed to provide higher education to youths and spending in education sector out of its resources. Pakistan’s education system was also facing challenges, he added.

Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairman Tariq Rafi said that MUET was Sindh’s No.1 engineering university whose engineers had a big share in Pakistan’s development. He lauded MUET’s research and academic work.

MUET Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Tuaha Hussain Ali said that the institution was catering to other needs of the community, besides offering education; it was helping people in distress in natural calamities by raising funds.

He recalled that one of MUET students, Faiz Abro, was given PM’s ‘Flood Hero award’.
